Designing Customizable Open Source Online Editor
Introduction of Etherpad
What is EtherPad?EtherPad is a web-based online word processor with formatting options and a very low barrier for entry (no logins, no additional software, etc.). It's a great writing tool that supports collaborative writing, note-taking and document editing in real-time or asynchronously. EtherPad has been localized in many languages. It has a very decent in-browser text editor with good text formatting options such as bold, italics, underline, strikethrough and lists (both ordered as well as unordered).
Purpose of EtherPadEtherPad was designed to collaborate quickly on a public text, taking notes of online meetings or classes collaboratively, and in real time. It is easy to be used for online classes or face-to-face classes, and put everyone literally "on the same page". EtherPad offers a lot of the same features as Google Docs, but is not suited for sensitive information as it has limited password protection and access control features. However, it's a true real-time collaboration tool that can engage students visually in online and face-to-face classes.

How to Use EtherPad?Each member participating in a pad is listed on the box above the chatbox and is identified by a username and an authorship color that has been assigned to the user. Users can change the authorship colors. It also displays line numbers by default on the pad. EtherPad is written in a way that makes it easy for developers to maintain and add new features. It does this via a full-featured plugin framework, because of this EtherPad has many available plug-ins. Once you have EtherPad installed it is possible to for the administrators to visit the plugin page and take control.
